Having a skincare routine is a great step to start caring about your skin, but it just not end there, you need to know how to apply every step, to get the best out of cosmetics you’re using.
If you start searching on the internet about the correct sequence of steps, you’re going to get confused because different brands recommend different sequences and rest times. However, the most popular tried and tested is to go from the thinnest of the consistencies to the thickest. Let’s get into the details
Step 1: Serums
Why start with serums? Because they have the thinnest consistencies and get absorbed in the skin fairly quickly. Try to use serums that help in rejuvenating or making the texture better. You should choose ingredients that help the type of skin you wish to have, for example, what’s the purpose? Is it anti-aging or acne-free or equally toned, etc
Many cosmetic chemists recommend adding antioxidants into the serums, mostly Vitamin C, because it helps in recovering all the damage caused by the pollution, sun, and promotes collagen production.
Step 2: Take a break
Serums need some to work their magic, and if you start applying other cosmetics, the charm is lost then and there only. It is advised to do your daily chores in between the steps.
Step 3: Locking down the good things
You have got the essential nourishment from the serum, and now you need to lock it down, and in doing so, moisturizers can help. If you have dry skin, it helps in maintaining the required moisture, and oily skin can shift to clay-based or mild moisturizers.
The application of serum and moisturizer is interchangeable if you have sensitive skin and your serums are a bit harsh on your skin, but if not, we recommend you go serum first and then moisturizer.
Step 4: Oils/Toners
Now its time to apply oils/oil-based toners to make the skin look healthy and fresh. Oils can penetrate moisturizers, but not the other way around, so always moisturize first and then oil your skin. You can choose the oils according to the benefit and texture you want, for example, jojoba oil is best for repairing the skin internally.
Step 5: Sunscreen
It is essential to use sunscreen, even if you’re not going outdoors for the day. The point is other than sun protection, sunscreens also help in preventing pollution effects, so it is advisable to end your skincare routine with it.
Step 6: A night cream/Serum/Elixir before the nap
Since you’re going to do sleep, your skin needs cream or serum, mostly retinol-based, that can help in giving the nourishment to make the skin ready for the next day. A night cream is essential as it helps in improving the ability of the skin to retain moisture, helps in a dark spot and pigmentation reduction.
If you do layering of the skin as mentioned in the steps above, you will be seeing visible changes in about 2 months, and your skin will have a spot-free visibly clear skin. Layering the products correctly can help in accelerating the process of making your skin better, rather then cluelessly applying everything that you see. We hope that we made a point and next time, you’re going to layer the skincare routine as advised.
